The words ‘theology’ and ‘apocalypse’ can often seem difficult and obscure. Theology may feel impersonal and distant, irrelevant to daily life. Apocalypse, on the other hand, conjures up images of doomsday scenarios, burning buildings and rising smoke. And when we turn to the Book of Revelation for answers, we are baffled by dream-like imagery, evocative symbols, and garish colors and quickly retreat to more familiar territory.

The First and the Last masterfully demystifies these two words – by introducing Revelation as a vision of the triune glory of God who holds everything together. Melvin Tinker places the book in its original context, enabling us to understand its images and connect it with our contemporary experience. Through a series of expositions which tease out the theological and pastoral aspects of the book of Revelation, we catch glimpses of God the Father, who was and is and is to come; God the Son, the Lion who is the Lamb; and God the Sevenfold Spirit.

Through The First and the Last, you will discover Revelation anew, not as a doomsday book, but as an opening of windows to a reality more real than we can see; not as a confusing collection of images, but as a map to guide your way to greater delight in the triune God.

The Trinity and Revelation

There are many good books on the Doctrine of the Trinity such as: ‘The Forgotten Trinity’ by James R White, ‘The Holy Trinity’ by Robert Letham, and Stuart Olyott’s work ‘What the Bible Teaches About: The Trinity’, published by Evangelical Press. But what makes this book unique is its focus is on the Book of Revelation. And let’s be honest how many of us, when we think of the Trinity of God, do our thoughts immediately to the Book of Revelation? Yet Melvin Tinker, with godly insight, and application, clearly demonstrates the Book of Revelation overflows with references to the Trinity. For example, concerning the Holy Spirit, on page 94, in reference to Revelation 1:4 – 5, we read: ‘In the glory and splendour of eternity the Father, Son and Holy Spirit equal in divinity, supreme in majesty, reign over-all. So, the blessings which come from the divine throne to God’s people have a three-fold source: Grace and peace to you from Him who is, and who was and is the come, AND from the Seven Spirits BEFORE His throne AND from Jesus Christ… the insertion of the Seven Spirits between the reference to God and Jesus makes it impossible to understand it as anything other than a symbolic description of the Spirit as the third person of the Trinity.’ This is a truly worthwhile study on the Trinity of God, which is clearly referred to, and identified in the final Book of Scripture. While it is true, the author ‘pulls no punches’ and is direct, and to the point, many could find these words challenging, and perhaps even unpopular or unwelcome. However, when we consider how many congregations and believers who appear to be “saved, stuck and satisfied” this is a timely and pertinent call for all who claim the Name of Christ “wake up and live” in the light of our Triune God. Get this book, read it, keep it and buy another for a friend or your pastor, for this is another valuable work published by Evangelical Press.
