The Surprising Good News of the Fear of the Lord "Let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God." —2 Corinthians 7:1 We all have experienced fear at some point. And if we are honest, we don't usually think of fear as a good thing. So why does the Bible call us to fear the Lord?

In this book, Michael Reeves explains that the fear of God is not a gloomy fear marked by anxiety but a heartfelt and happy enjoyment of God as Creator and Redeemer. As we learn more about the surprising good news of the fear of the Lord, we will discover the vital role we play in displaying to the world the awesomeness of our God.

Helpful reflections, but I wanted a fuller answer

This short book offers a helpful distinction between being afraid of God and fearing the Lord. Reeves argues that the gospel frees us from slavish fear and replaces it with joyful, reverent awe—a theme he develops with warmth and clarity. The highlight for me was his emphasis that if we only know God as King and Creator, we may be left with dread, but when we know Him through His redeeming grace in Christ, we learn to delight in Him. His reflections on God's holiness being revealed not only in His righteousness but also in His mercy and kindness were especially encouraging. While I appreciated these insights, I felt the book functioned more as a meditation than a thorough answer to its title. It's a worthwhile read, but it left me wanting more. I'm interested in reading the full-length version to see these ideas explored in greater depth.
